The Kavala kourabiye is tied to Nea Karvali, a village in the Kavala area of northern Greece.

Its people descend from the Greeks of Karvali in Cappadocia, who arrived in the 1924 population exchange and brought the recipe with them: butter, almonds and plenty of sugar.
